Department of Language and Literature

About

The Department of Language and Literature offers bachelor's degrees in both English and English Education.

In addition to being the ideal preparation for graduate and professional programs, a degree in English prepares students for careers in teaching, law, public relations, journalism, writing, non-profit organizations, government service, and any number of other fields requiring superior communication skills and a well-rounded education.

English majors at GSU have the opportunity to put their knowledge and skills into practice beyond the classroom through student organizations and activities including the student literary journal, Trillium, the Little Kanawha Theater & Drama Club, Pioneer Debate, and the department newsletter, Writers Bloc.

Mission: The Department of Language and Literature prepares students with skills in college-level reading, writing, communication, and cultural literacy, and for a variety of graduate and professional studies and careers requiring advanced skills in the same, including careers in English language arts education.

Vision: The Department of Language and Literature will support GSU’s general education program as it evolves, bolster the department’s reputation for producing quality educators, and adapt its curriculum to foster in its graduates thoughtful citizenship, productive skills, and the pursuit of lifelong learning.
